Chennai's Madras Christian College has recently introduced a technologically advanced duck to assess the water quality of a lake located on its expansive 300-acre campus in Tambaram. This IoT-enabled duck, controlled remotely, will traverse the lake to collect real-time data on key parameters such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and pH levels. The lake, an essential water source within the campus, underwent desilting as part of a corporate social responsibility initiative by Bisleri International Limited, who also provided funding for the development of a water quality checking prototype. The team at MCC-MRF Innovation Park designed a 3D-printed duck equipped with sensors and developed an app to receive and analyze the collected data. Principal Paul Wilson expresses that utilizing this data will enable informed decision-making for lake conservation, thereby safeguarding the campus's ecology and wildlife. The smart duck's concept originated from Wilson, who highlights its ability to detect changes in water quality, indicating potential contamination and facilitating prompt mitigation measures. The duck's solar panels provide power and can sustain operation for up to two days without sunlight, with manual charging as an option. Developed by the startup KOLOZEN, this smart duck has been successfully gathering and transmitting data over the past two weeks. Researchers propose extending this technology to monitor water bodies beyond the campus, emphasizing its utility in assessing environmental health, disease outbreaks, and hydroinformatics. Professor T Pradeep from IIT Madras envisions building a comprehensive platform using this data to study water bodies during varying conditions and seasons. Additionally, the lush scrub jungle within the MCC campus supports diverse wildlife, underscoring the importance of initiatives like the smart duck in preserving the local ecosystem.Meras are installed in its eyes to assist the college in tracking the movements of wild animals on campus.
